Registration and payment for the 2024 Raising Children with Disabilities: With Disability Pride. A Weekend of Learning and Celebration for Parents* of Children with Disabilities. Registration is due by April 5, 2024. Please note that we only have 15 participant slots and will close when they are full. Payment must be received to be fully registered.
Michigan Disability Rights Coalition (MDRC) and LETA Solutions Her Power are excited to host a three-day event for parents of children with disabilities. We will meet at Zehnder’s Splash Village Hotel and Waterpark in Frankenmuth from April 19th to 21st, 2024.

Due to the many stereotypes and stigma surrounding disability, children with disabilities are often encouraged to ‘fit in’ and ‘overcome’ their disabilities. In this weekend retreat, parents* will come together to explore a disability justice model of disability and further their understanding of the concept of disability pride.

This weekend’s event will celebrate the lives of people with disabilities. Parents will dig deeper into disability history and culture while embracing disability as part of their child’s identity. Celebrating disability identity leads to self-empowerment and a sense of belonging. Parents play an essential role in creating an environment where children with disabilities can explore disability history, culture, and pride and are encouraged to accept all parts of their identities.

Parents who have attended in the past have said things like, “The trainers were knowledgeable, engaging, and authentic,” and “life-changing and thoughtful content that changed our perspectives.”

Parents/Caregivers will:

Learn how to move through shame and gain pride

Explore the vital role that disability history, culture, and pride play in the lives of people with disabilities

Discuss ways that family members can support the development of pride and power in the lives of their

Discover how they can be an ally to the disability community

Registration Fee:
$100 ($50 of the registration fee) will be returned on the last day for participants that attend. Money will be returned after full participation and evaluation are submitted in person on Sunday. If you do not attend, the registration fee is non-refundable. Please note that the content builds on itself; the same parent/guardian must attend the entire time. Need-based scholarships are available for participants from Wayne and Macomb counties and Detroit. Need-based scholarships are also available to current foster parents or parents who adopted a child with a disability.
